See that? That’s a Honda D16Y7’s throttle body. Here’s an idea of how finicky it is: 16 hours of total work time were spent swapping a new engine into my Civic. So far I have spent another 16 hours just trying to get this little shit to cooperate. I’m five seconds from blocking off the IACV entirely, because when I did that to test if it was working all of my problems magically disappeared.

*inb4 VTEC joke.

Have you tried taking the IAC off and cleaning it out? Sometimes that's all it takes to fix issues on a Honda D-series.

No.

Yup. I also tried swapping the IAC. It didn’t work.

Is it a known good IAC? If you block it off and it works, it's either a bad IAC or the wiring.

It was teh IAC from my other engine, which ran perfectly

have you used anything to verify that there isn’t a vacuum leak elsewhere? or are you have symptoms of too much vacuum...

I’d say either wiring issue or it decided at that moment to crap out.

Straight engine swap or upgrade? Does the plug for the IAC fit another sensor?

Sometimes the symptoms go away, so unless the leak comes and goes I dunno what’s up

Straight swap. The plug is unique

What are the symptoms?

Super high idle *some of the time*, and occasionally my idle will pulse up and down about 75rpm. With either IACV. I think I have a leaky throttle body

Sounds like classic air bubble in the cooling system. Did you run it with the radiator cap off untill all the air worked its way out? I use a special funnel for this to keep the coolant from spilling everywhere.

Yeah, I’ve done a hardcore bleed of the coolant system. Jacked the front of the car up about four feet and let it idle for a couple of hours. I also tried vacuuming out the system. I’m befuddled.

Can you read the data list with a scan tool while it's doing it?

Yup, but honestly nothing looked weird.

Pull the cover off the cold air valve (two screws) and screw the white plastic plunger clockwise until it bottoms out.

That’s the white bit on the end of the green plastic electrical part?

That throttle body looks a little strange. What year car and engine?
search fast idle control valve. Just for KISS sake did you adjust the idle screw?

98 Civic D16Y7. I’m 98% sure I have a vacuum leak somewhere causing me to idle at 1500 which is so high the IACV has absolutely no effect on idle speed at that point. Problem is my machine for finding vacuum leaks is broken at the moment, so I just blocked off the IACV by sandwiching a piece of aluminium between the IACV and the TB. Car runs perfectly now.

Spray with carb cleaner and the idle will change when it hits the leak
